Crickey, I thought they were Australian! The badge looks like its based on the national flag. Best known model is the Outback. They put backseats in the bed of a small truck to avoid the chicken tax and sell a ute in the US. They are called Subaru, which was the name of Australia’s oldest known kangaroo. All Wheel Drive, Koala Wheel Drive. Boxer engines, Australia celebrates Boxing Day. Marketing REALLY dropped the ball here!

Same, but Lotus took more convincing, especially with the Camry engines.

The badge is based on the Seven Sisters constellation.

I always knew they were Japanese, but Subaru always felt like a more European type of car to me than the other Japanese brands.
But if it makes you feel better, Subaru is part of Fuji Heavy Industries, which was formed in the breakup of the Nakajima Aircraft Company following WWII. Another part of Nakajima was Fuji Precision Industries (later the Prince Motor Company), most famous for the Skyline, an who of course eventually became part of Nissan.

I didn’t realize this until well into my 30s, but that’s because I think Subarus are hateful shit boxes and never bothered learning more about them.

What? Seriously? Have you seen how paper thin the doors were on the Loyale? That could only be vintage Japan.
